Bamboos; One of the Most Important Renewable, Easily Obtained, and Valuable of all Forest Resources1/4/2023 Bamboos are one of the most abundant non-timber plants on Earth and cover a wide area of tropical and subtropical regions around the world. Bamboo has the highest growth rate of all tropical plants. The American Bamboo Society has successfully introduced many new species of bamboos in the United States. The bamboos of North America are found in the Eastern and Southeastern United States, from New Jersey south to Florida and west to Texas. As long as the climate is right, bamboo plants grow in nearly any type of reasonably fertile well-drained soil.
It requires little maintenance and is relatively drought tolerant, although it performs better with regular irrigation. Bamboos can complete the growing process in both diameter and height in 35 to 40 days. Bamboo has many uses, mainly in construction (scaffolding, roofing, and flooring), food, paper, biofuels, furniture, fabrics, textiles, charcoal, ornamental gardens, and environmental characteristics, such as a large carbon sink and good phytoremediation option, improving the soil structure as well as the soil erosion. Bamboos are of notable economic and cultural significance in East Asia, Southeast Asia, as well as in South Asia. Bamboo is the world's fastest producer of biomass and can be used for anything between production of paper or clothing, used as a building material such as flooring, fences and screens, bench tops, or even as the food source in the form of the edible shoots. It is a green and sustainable material which plays a vital role in architecture. In the future, architecture based on the green building will be built with bamboo as one of its most important materials. Bamboos are lightweight and flexible, and stronger than steel and most hardwoods. They are also more affordable compared to wood as it is one of the cheapest construction materials and is easy to grow. Moreover, it can be used as a construction substitute for any wood. In short, it is a versatile multi-purpose forest produce that plays a vital role in domestic and industrial economies.
